Take your place. The future is now. You don’t evolve into who you want to be, you decide it. So take your place, make your mark, be the person you want to be in your family, in your community, in your career, in the world.

~Lawrence Wright

Where’s there fear, there’s power.

~Starhawk

Take your place, make your mark, be the person you want to be… you don’t evolve into who you want to be, you decide it. How many of us need to hear that right now? Raise your hand. (Double handed emoji here!)

Larry Wright is a staff journalist for The New Yorker, a playwright, screenwriter, and bestselling author of many books, including Pulitzer Prize-winning, The Looming Tower, now a series on Hulu (check out the trailer below), Going Clear, also an award-winning HBO documentary, and his latest bestseller that came out this week (!), God Save Texas. Larry, like most of the people I’ve interviewed, is a person who has taken his epiphanies and built his life upon them, and I think the wisdom these epiphanies hold are ultra-important right now. We need everyone activated and stepping into their power.

Who do you want to be in the world? Who do you want to become if you’re not already that person? Those are your gifts and talents calling, Folks. Heed the call. Take the steps. Take your place. Watch these videos and read Larry’s stories and wisdom – I hope they inspires you and much as it does/has me. And if you want to read more … I give you more background below.

For those of you in LA this weekend, Larry will be at the Los Angeles Festival of Books on Sat., April 21 at 12 noon.

“TAKE YOUR PLACE.”

“WHERE THERE’S FEAR, THERE’S POWER.”

* PEEK BEHIND THE SCENES *

Larry Wright and I met in Austin, TX, in an acting class of all places. He was my scene partner. The first words we ever said to one another were lines from a play. He was a successful author and staff writer for The New Yorker who was taking acting classes while he was writing screenplays so he could understand dialogue more deeply.

Cool, right?

That’s the kind of guy he is — thorough, curious, prolific and game – and humble. To me, that’s cool. He will try anything (even one-man shows of his own material when he’d never professionally acted) and seems unafraid. But is he? Or is he a person who is afraid sometimes like all of us, BUT…he does it anyway? (Watch/Read his epiphanies and find out…FYI: he also has a great epiphany in the book about making decisions in his life by weighing 2 factors: Importance and Fun.)

Larry was one of the first people I reached out for an interview for Epiphany. He was instrumental in my getting attention for the project and a book deal. He was instrumental in my having the confidence to continue with it too. When I first interviewed him, it was on the phone, not recorded. I took notes, old-school journalist-style. When I sent him our interview and got his feedback, he changed almost nothing and said, “You know, you’re really good at this.” That stuck with me whenever I had major doubts and was scared into paralyzation. Remembering his words and his epiphanies – he has had several that all add up to his stepping into his power and becoming the man and adult he was meant to be.

I love his story in the second video above about interviewing the well-known Wiccan (witch), Starhawk, for a story he was working on (I have another serendipitous story about that too for another time). He mentioned to her that he had a huge talk coming up that he was nervous about and she said to him, “You know, we witches have a saying, ‘Where there’s fear, there’s power.’”

All his epiphanies stories have helped me take a deep breath and move forward. To keep stepping up and into my power, or trying to anyway. It’s serendipitous that Larry’s play (which he adapted from a screenplay) provided the role that sparked my epiphany and birthed the Epiphany project. I later went and filmed his interview in his home office in Austin, Texas and as you can see, it’s chock full of behind-the-scenes info and wisdom.

And if you haven’t watched The Looming Tower on Hulu – it’s a MUST-SEE. The trailer is below and his latest book, God Save Texas: A Journey Into The Soul of the Lone Star State, just came out on April 17, so maybe it will have its shot as a series on a major network too! … Stay tuned to see where it will “Take Its Place…”
