Education equals more ideas, more growth, and more opportunities for all.
Kamat is a Maasai Warrior from a village near the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania that we visited while there in the summer of 2008. The Maasai are a semi-nomadic people in northern Tanzania and Kenya and have maintained their ancient customs and lifestyles. Kamat is the village chieftain’s son, and he was the only person who was fluent in English there at the time. He was our guide during our visit and explained their ways of life. Because he is the chieftain’s son, Kamat is getting a Western education in the nearest town and then returns to his village, splitting his time between the two. When I asked him about his greatest epiphany, it had to do with education and the ideas that he wants to implement when he takes over for his father in the coming years. He also was very keen to visit the United States soon. We actually went in one of their nomadic homes with the fire that is constantly burning inside that he talks about. After experiencing that, I feel his idea to move the fire out of the homes is an excellent one, and his dreams of furthering his education and of bringing further education to his village was very inspiring for me. It was wonderful to meet a future leader like Kamat, and I am excited about that prospect for the lovely people I met that day.
